Concordia Publishing Accepts Most Prestigious Quality Award

Bruce Kintz and the Concordia Quality Team

Saint Louis, MO—On November 21 of 2011, Concordia Publishing House (CPH), the official publisher of The Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod, received the news they waited nearly eleven years to hear—they had won the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award.

According to Concordia Publishing House’s President and CEO, Dr. Bruce G. Kintz, “It was with God’s grace that CPH achieved a level of excellence that few major corporations realize. As a Christian organization we are humbled by our achievements; and as a thriving publishing house, we are proud to represent both innovation and sustainability in this ever changing marketplace.”

Since the announcement, the CPH team has been preparing for their trip to Washington D.C. for The Quest for Excellence 2012 conference and ceremony, which began this weekend and continues throughout the week.

On Sunday, April 15 at the 24th annual conference of the Baldrige Performance Excellence Program, CPH received their honorary Baldrige Award from Secretary of Commerce John Bryson. The award was accepted on CPH's behalf by Dr. Kintz and Jonathan Schultz, vice president and corporate counsel of CPH.

During the Quest event, all 2011 and 2010 recipients of the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award showcase their best practices. Representatives from Concordia Publishing House will spend time sharing the knowledge they gained during their decade-long journey.

Representatives will be speaking about the organization’s operations, workforce, and customer focus, as well as strategic planning, measurement, analysis and knowledge management.

Organizations represented at the Quest event are comprised of the seven 2010 winners (including another St. Louis based company, Nestle Purina) and the four 2011 recipients—three health care organizations and Concordia Publishing House, the only Christian publisher to win this award.

“Quality performance isn’t really about the award; it is what we are called to give in service to the Gospel of Christ,” Kintz said. “This award testifies to that spirit at CPH.”
