Latest Release: Luther’s Works, Volume 57 (Sermons IV)

This volume contains a selection of Luther’s preaching between May 1531 and June 1539. In the first few years after the decisive Diet of Augsburg (1530) and the Evangelical confession of faith presented there (the Augsburg Confession), Luther grappled with how best to teach the doctrine of justification. Sermons dealing with Christian righteousness and the proper distinction of Law and Gospel show Luther formulating this theme in a way that could be understood by his hearers for generations to come. Luther’s preaching during these years also addressed Baptism, ordination to the preaching office, marriage, Christ’s return, the end of the world, the confession of the Trinity in the creeds, and the person of Christ. The sermons make clear that Christian doctrine is not just for the classroom and textbook, but also and especially for the hearing, admonition, and consolation of all Christians.

About Martin Luther

Martin Luther (November 10, 1483–February 18, 1546) is remembered as “Doctor biblicus,” the Father of Protestantism, and the founder of Lutheranism. As an Augustinian Hermit and professor of theology in Wittenberg, Germany, Luther began by opposing the sale of indulgences, an action that thrust him into international fame. Eventually, he called for a thorough reformation of church teaching and practice based on Holy Scripture alone.

Luther's Works is part of the Lutheran Church Fathers Subscription Program.
