Standard Reformation Bulletin: A Mighty Fortress

A Mighty Fortress is our God.

Pictured on the cover of this Reformation Bulletin is Coburg Fortress, in Coburg, Germany. The Coburg Fortress complex is one of the largest in Germany and was never able to be taken in battle, so impregnable was its heights and fortifications. Martin Luther stayed here from April through October of 1530, during the Diet of Augsburg, because it was the southern-most holding in Electoral Saxony. Here he was safe from capture and imprisonment since he was still under the Imperial Ban. He was in constant contact with his colleagues in Augsburg via many letters. He worked on his translation of the Bible during this time. No doubt it was precisely this kind of fortress that inspired his most famous hymn, “A Mighty Fortress is Our God.” The photo shows the main entrance into the Fortress. To this day, the Coburg Fortress is breathtaking and awe-inspiring.
