Solid, Delightful Writing for a Solid Lutheran Chorale

My choir sang this anthem for the first time last Sunday (9/30/2018). We tend to have more tenors and basses than we do sopranos and altos, so this gave the tenors and basses a little chance to shine. The organ opens with a cheery ritornello-like introduction that will be heard throughout. The first stanza is men over the organ ritornello. On stanza 2, the men sing a charming and rhythmic countermelody over yet another tune played by the organ, while the women supply the chorale melody. This gives the impression of a trio that is as much fun to hear as it is for the men to sing. A short SATB section on the final stanza stays pretty true to the chorale setting and provides a solid, proclaiming, finish. My only issue with this anthem is it's outdated language. I would love to see a new edition with non-gender specific language for God and "you" instead of "thou." That said, the copyright dates from 1971, so it is a product of its time. Still, I think an updated version might give this anthem some new life. This is definitely a new favorite for me and the choir liked it too! We will find lots of uses for it.
