This book consists of a series of statements from men and women dating between 1501 to 1559. These statements illustrate the ideas, beliefs, and sometimes the fates, of the people who had come to share a profound discontent with the church as it then existed and a positive determination to change it.

Writings include

  • Erasmus and Hutten the humanists
  • Luther and Melanchthon
  • Zwingli
  • Sattler the Anabaptist
  • Servetus the Unitarian
  • Calvin the theologian and lawgiver
  • the English reformers, a special breed -- from the rabble-rousing Fish to Cromwell the administrator, Starkey the moderate, the King and the Archbishop of Canterbury
Spitz provides historical and theological context for each document and a reading list for further exploration.

very appealing!

If the History of the Reformation is of interest to you, then you must have this book! After a short introductory chapter of the major players, the reader then simply reads some of the most famous articles by those players. Certainly, not every word of the Reformation documents could be contained in one book. Here, author Lewis W. Spitz has given us a straight on view of some major documents. Some of the included documents are from Erasmus, Luther, Zwingli and Calvin, as well as the last chapter devoted to the English Reformation, which includes the examination of Lady Jane Grey only 4 days before her death. Each section has a short historical introduction, then we get into the words, pure and simple. Don't skip over Luther's Funeral Oration by Melanchthon, where he defends Luther's enormous place in history and his belief that God raised Luther up for the special task, as well as Luther's sincere love for all that belong to Christ. An excellent resource.
