Who your heroes are says a lot about you. “We live in the shadows of our heroes. We look up to them. We try to live like them. Our heroes encourage and inspire us.”

In A Martyr’s Faith in a Faithless World, Pastor Bryan Wolfmueller urges readers to consider not only who their heroes are, but how those heroes shape them.

Wolfmueller shows that heroic martyrs St. Stephen, St. Perpetua, Polycarp, Romanus, and St. Agatha are not defined by their achievements, but by the power of faith that God worked within them. These martyrs demonstrate the heroism of following Christ with humble hearts in the face of affliction and death. Each martyr stands as a testament to the bold rejection of sin, patient endurance through affliction, and firm grounding in the ultimate joy of heaven. Wolfmueller expertly combines practical principles, Church history, and a rich use of Scripture to provide
encouragement for the Christian's struggle against suffering and sin. Ultimately, the book directs readers to look to Christ, who completed the greatest act of heroism in his saving death and resurrection.

What a treasure this book is!

I am so grateful I own this book; it has given me new insights into how the devil attacks us in the world and how our Lord responds and strengthens us. Wonderful!!

Accessible but in-depth look at the parable of the sower

This book was not what I expected. Based upon the title, I thought it would be more about the lives of martyrs, but there was actually relatively little about martyrs. Each section of the book began with a brief two-page account of an ancient martyr, but the majority of the book was an in-depth (but accessible) look at the parable of the sower. Pastor Wolfmueller explores the tactics of the devil to snatch the seed of faith before it has a chance to take root, and how the devil uses the thorns and weeds of this world (both suffering and pleasure) to choke out that faith. He examines what it means to be the “good dirt” in the parable, and holds up the martyrs as heroes for modern-day Christians of those who, by God’s grace and strength, remained the good dirt even unto martyrdom. The final chapter of the book is especially poignant, as Pastor Wolfmueller paints for the reader a vivid account of running the race pictured in Hebrews 12. As we run the “final lap” of that race in our lives, we begin to see those in the crowd who have gone before us, cheering us on. The scene brings me to tears each time I read it. I highly recommend this book to all Christians as they run the race set before them, fixing their eyes on Jesus.

Chapter 27 Alone is Worth 10x the Price!

In this book, Pastor Wolfmueller lays out beautiful encouragement for the Christian life. Our lives are not going to be easy and Wolfmueller weaves his call to persistence with an exploration of the parable of the sower, the stories of martyrs of the past, Peter's words of encouragement and much more. Chapter 27 is a riff on Hebrews' "Since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses," it's a marvelous chapter, one worth ten times the asking price of the book alone. The world can be a draining place to live: do yourself a favor a pick this book up to be reminded of the distant triumph song of the church triumphant!

Even Better Than Expected

I don't normally expect the words "martyr" and "encouragement" to work in the same sentence. Pastor Wolfmueller changed my mind with this gift to The Church. He uses examples from history, deep application of Scripture, and truth from other doctrinally sound sources to show us that THE FAITH is for us. Don't tell anyone, but my eyes kept leaking for the 2nd half of the book. This wasn't sorrow, it was joy at glimpses of the grand panorama of what God has done and continues to do in the lives of his people. It is astonishingly beautiful! There was Law that made the repent the flippant way I sometimes approach Scripture and preaching. The overwhelming Gospel is that we have been forgiven. (Me, too.) While I'm looking forward to meeting the martyrs that showed up in this book, I'm also looking forward to this Sunday. God's Word is a sword that I get to treasure and use, not merely hang like a decoration to my life.

It is outstanding!

This book answers questions we all have in a clear yet concise way. Truly Pastor Wolfmueller is a gifted and inspirational writer blessed by God. Here’s an example: “This prayer (the Lord’s Prayer) is an inventory of the gifts and riches that the Lord wants for us.” This is a book that keeps on giving! Praise the Lord!

When I found out that Bryan Wolfmueller was coming out with another book, I was so pumped! His last book was fantastic, so my expectations were very high for this one. Yet even so, my expectations were exceeded! This book has taught me so many things, and I can't wait to re-read it again, and again, and again, writing notes throughout it. This book will help me not only in my teen years, but as I head off to college, and seminary. I will keep this book with me, because it is exactly what I need as a sinful human being who struggles with his flesh. This book is absolutely necessary if you're a sinner (which you are, so I highly recommend this book)! It always brings us back to Christ, who is the founder and perfecter of our Faith, who is given to us in His Holy Word, which this book encourages us to dig into! With each chapter, I found myself excited to dig into God's Holy Word more and more, also getting me excited for Sunday to receive the gifts that Christ gives us in the divine service. This book has helped me in many ways, and I'm hoping it will help you too.

It's about faith.

Let's be honest - no one really wants to die a martyr's death. But Pastor Bryan Wolfmueller loves to talk about Christian martyrs. Telling about the death of a martyr seems to excite him. I was afraid his new book would be titled Wolfmueller's Book of Martyrs. It's not. The first chapter of A Martyr's Faith in a Faithless World is called Christians Need Heroes. Going forward with that theme, Pastor Wolfmueller begins each of the book's five sections with a brief account of a famous Christian martyr. He then teaches about faith by explaining an aspect of The Parable of the Sower. In section one, Pastor Wolfmueller introduces the parable. In the next three sections, corresponding to the first three seeds, he handles the dangers to the Christian faith. The final section tells of the seed that falls on the good ground and the hope of the harvest. And in teaching the parable, Pastor Wolfmueller manages to include many Biblical accounts and probably every aspect of the Christian faith, including Adam and Eve, Job, Christian vocation, sin, lust, money, and more. When I read a book like this, I always ask myself, "What do I take with me? What impacted me?" But this book is profuse with truth, with each chapter containing teachings that I could study and meditate on for hours and days. I especially appreciate the extensive quotations from the Bible, from Luther's Works, and from the Lutheran Confessions. So, I'll be reading this book again and again.
