When you leave church humming a hymn, you are humming a sermon because hymns are overflowing with Christ. The purpose of singing them is to praise God by proclaiming the saving work of His Son.

Praise & Honor: Hymn-Inspired Devotions draws out Christ’s riches from 14 beloved hymns. Parishioners, pastors, and musicians alike will enjoy the depth of personal stories that the author, Rev. Timothy J. Shoup, uses and the hundreds of Bible passages he draws from to amplify the rich meaning of the texts. Each hymn is introduced with a short reading, followed by a devotional for each stanza. Of the hymns chosen, most are familiar, a few are newer, but they all enrich your faith and bring you closer to the Lord of life.

An Edifying Work

Praise & Honor by Timothy Shoup is very rich in doctrine while having a strong shepherding, pastoral spirit throughout. He takes the marrow from the selected hymns and uses it as a foundation for conveying Biblical truth to the reader. Theologically-focused yet accessible. I have found this book to be an encouragement to me in my faith. Very edifying.

A treasure

My wife and I are singing and reading our way through Pastor Shoup´s devotions after lunch each day, and they are terrific. Solid doctrine joined with literary and musical insight that bring new and old hymns to life. Thanks Pastor Shoup. Pastor David Warner, LCMS Missionary to Spain

Written with the care with which the hymnwriters wrote

Tim Shoup pairs theology with devotion, music with text, and most importantly, the Gospel with the people of his parish (and our own). This is written with a pastors heart, aiming to make the hymns come alive by slowing down enough to pay attention to the theology that is worth singing about it. It isn't ivory tower. It is connected to hospital waiting rooms and marriage difficulties. It isn't an easy devotional to breeze through; it deserves its time but each paragraph will deliver.

Read, Reflect, and Rejoice!

As a church musiciain and Lutheran school teacher I have always enjoyed reading the text of hymns prior to singing them; meditating on the depth of the words and the Biblical principals the hymn writer is expressing; reflecting on how the music compliments the text. Prasie and Honor: Hymn-inspired Devotions by Timothy J Shoup has introduced me to several new hymns (quickly becoming favorites that I plan to teach my students) and has brought new, more in depth meanings and reflection to long-time cherished hymns of The Church. For eacn hymn Pastor Shoup has created a tapestry-interweaving Scripture, history, word meaning, purpose, musicality, artistry, application, and reflection. I have enjoyed Praise and Honor for my personal study and reflection time. I encourage you to use it in this manner. CAUTION: TAKE YOUR TIME! There is a vast amount upon which you can read, reflect and rejoice! This book would also make a worthwhile group devotional book study. I envision some interesting conversations among believers as the group delves into the text and devotionals for these fourteeen hymns which center on milestones in the life of any Christian.

Insightful devotional thoughts bring the words and music of these hymns to life

This devotional book provides great insights into the history, background, and melodies of these wonderful hymns. In addition, the author uses everyday examples to connect the message of the hymn to the readers every day life and faith. I enjoyed using the book in my personal daily devotions.

Each Paragraph is packed...

Upon returning home from a conference, my wife handed me this book, Praise & Honor: Hymn-Inspired Devotions. I was happy to see that Pastor Shoup had featured hymns that I had grown up singing, fourteen in fact, some of them written over one thousand years ago, tying us to our past, and a few newer ones, which are fast becoming favorites. After singing the hymns during worship, we can easily leave them in church, tucked away in the hymnal until next time time that we see them again. Pastor Shoup takes time to introduce each hymn which I really found helpful. He also uncovers many points easily missed, and weaves together personal stories, quotes, and Scripture passages to embellish his insights. Having one devotion for each stanza allows one to ponder and absorb each hymn's meaningful text. Pastor Shoup packs a lot into each paragraph, and succeeded in bringing the Lord of life into my daily life as expected, and to my surprise, provided glimpses into God's glory in the throne room of heaven. He also expresses appreciation for music and musicians by highlighting how certain hymn tunes were crafted to compliment a particular text and message. The book reminded me of how fortunate I was that my mom and dad taught as a young boy to sing and worship, and how fortunate we are to have God's message of grace and Christ in the hymns and liturgy. It is a wonderful devotional, one that you will want add to your library and pick up again and again. Thank you Pastor Shoup. Bruce Wegner, St. Paul, Mn

Many thanks to Pastor Shoup for these great devotions. My wife and I are using them and very much enjoying them. I find them extremely well written and conceived. She finds them chock-full of theological insight...and usually goes back and reads them again after we read them together. Dr. Joel D. Lehenbauer Executive Director Commission on Theology and Church Relations The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod

...a tremendous powerhouse of a devotional book! Pastor Shoup expertly delves into a pleasing level of detail, drawing from many different sources from early church fathers to present day personal testimonies. The format and artistry of the book lends itself to be a useful comprehension aid. Each thread and stanza is devoutly brought forth in the Light of Holy Scripture. Hoping for a Praise & Honor II! Sola Scriptura. Sola Gratia. Sola Fide.
