Enclosed are eight weeks of study, divided into forty short sessions, to help you realize the gifts from God’s hand more fully. Ample materials are provided to make the sessions flexible for personal or group use and to accommodate changing schedules and individual needs. Fill up on joy and let it overflow!

This joy-filled, deep dive into the book of Philippians teaches how the spiritual gift of true joy comes from God. Whether studied with a small group or by myself, I found encouragement to apply to daily life. Thought-provoking questions, insightful points to ponder, and joy challenges kept me engaged through all 40 sessions. Be motivated to rejoice!

4/11/2020 Jesus now and when He returns!

Deb Burma’s book, Joy, beautifully guides us through Philippians. She gives us 40 days of delight, inviting us to embrace joy even in the midst of life’s difficulties. In a faithful way, Deb keeps the focus on the great hope, the return of our Savior on HIS day! Through Paul’s affection and encouragement to his readers, Deb helps us “shine as stars” in our world. Her “special delivery” notes enhance understanding of the text; each day a “joyful challenge” applies the verses to our lives. Whether studying Joy with a small group or reading it alone, you will be blessed! Renee Gibbs, Teacher, Retreat Speaker, Encourager

Deb Burma draws each reader into a three-way conversation with herself and Saint Paul as she picks up on the apostle’s celebration of the joy he has in the Lord and with the Philippian congregation. She leads readers through the epistle with personal stories, comment on the text, and application of its truths to daily life. The study provides video supplements and cues for using the daily devotions in a weekly group study that enriches the individual’s immersion in the conversation with Paul into which the Holy Spirit leads readers, sharing his joy at being Christ’s own. Robert Kolb, professor of systematic theology emeritus, Concordia Seminary, Saint Louis

What I love about "Joy: A Study of Philippians" by Deb Burma, are the variety of ways Deb easily engages with her readers. Her infectious smile, light hearted humor, deep knowledge of the Bible, caring heart and passion for Jesus shines brightly through the weekly video segments, daily personal studies and weekly group discussions. Learning comes alive with "Special Delivery" sections! This additional background information enriches and enhances understanding of the time of Paul. Deb's personal, relatable stories remind us of how the joy of Jesus is found in all circumstances. "Joyful Challenge" inspires us daily to recognize the joy of Christ in our everyday lives. This was a catalyst for many thoughtful discussions in our small Bible study group. This Christ-centered book is insightful, encouraging and joyful!!

I recently completed "Joy: A Study of Philippians" with several dear sisters in Christ. The book was perfectly structured for individual daily Bible study as well as for our weekly group study. Deb had us reflecting on Joy in our lives through her many relatable stories, and she also had us thinking more deeply about the scriptures though her many well researched historical notes. Her "Joyful Challenges" are especially relevant during these current, unprecedented times. If ever the world needed a Bible study on Joy, it is now!

Joy Spills Out of Every Page

I love getting a letter in my actual mailbox-especially if it's a personal letter from someone I know and love. Deb Burma's book Joy enables me to see the Book of Philippians not only as the apostle Paul's letter to the believers to the ancient city of Philippi but also as God's personal letter addressed specifically to me. Through the pages of Philippians and Deb Burma's study, I am encouraged and uplifted. Joy spills out of every page!

Joy in Christ Jesus

I have read the book of Philippians many times. When I began to read and study Deb Burma's book "JOY, I found not only the word "Joy" but the feeling of Joyful in the words in Philippians. I love Deb's book "JOY" as she brought words in Philippians alive by showing what Joy is when we have it in Christ Jesus.

Joy in Christ alone

JOY The Bible study group I facilitate is studying the book Joy by Deb Burma. We have completed the first two weeks (only meeting twice a month). Comments from the women include—easy to follow, short sections for each day, the answers are in the back so we can see if our thinking is on the right track. Our pastor has reviewed the book and is pleased with all of the references and extra insight they give to the reader through the Special Delivery side notes. Though it is Paul writing to the Philippians it reads like God writing to us. Even with life’s troubles—including death — we can have joy if we see that it comes from Christ alone, from his grace and mercy to us. Deb leads us on that path with real examples and gives us action steps to share this joy with others. The discussion questions are thought provoking and lead us to think of how we can see things God’s way instead of our way.

Want JOY?

Want JOY, no matter what difficult circumstances surround you? Experience JOY as you study the words God has for us in the book of Philippians. I loved the format of this refreshing book. Deb Burma masterfully interweaves the words of the Bible along with personal stories, insightful reference materials, helpful cultural and historical information, thought provoking questions, (and answers in the back), daily JOY challenges, and even free downloadable videos. I highly recommend this book for a personal Bible study or for a group Bible study.

JOY in Christ and our everyday lives!

This Bible study is so rich with truth, that I can't help but smile! I love that Burma unpacks Philippians in small chunks, allowing readers to really dig into the Word while keeping each snippet in context of the whole book. Focused on Christ, and the JOY we have in Him, this study format works well for both individual and group study. She provides tons of extra context and information throughout the margins of the entire study, engaging individuals no matter their comfort level with studying Scripture. By the end of the study, participants will see both of the JOY they have in Christ, and the joy in everyday life. Combining Biblical context, a verse-by-verse study of Philippians, and practical applications in our lives today, JOY is a study that people of all age ranges and walks of life will relate to and benefit from.
