Overview

When’s the last time you stepped up to the counter and ordered one medium-size Jesus, extra generous, and heavy on the bling? Or maybe you like your Jesus supersized! No? Perhaps you prefer yours extra small, and hold the onion please.

Here’s the same question: When’s the last time you took a hammer and a chisel to the Jesus of the Bible and formed Him into your own personal Jesus?

Will the Real Jesus Please Stand Up? not only reminds us who the real Jesus of the Bible is, but it also reveals to us twelve false christs who are embraced, loved, promoted, and revered—even by well-meaning Christians.

An eye-opening book!

As a layperson, I found this to be a very informative and eye-opening book on how the Jesus of the Bible is changed to fit the various beliefs, life styles and circumstances of individuals in today's culture. Pastor Richard has written this book in such a way that it is part "story telling" in order for the reader to understand the different real life circumstances that lead to false Christs, while then explaining how the real Jesus is "added to" and "subtracted from" in order to fit these circumstances. The real Jesus of the Bible is brought forward throughout the book by continually pointing out that it’s not about what we have to do (or not do) to earn His saving grace but to what He has done for us by dying on the cross for our sins.

We all believe in Jesus...

How many times have you heard it, "We all believe in Jesus..."? This is often said to downplay the differences between denominations. Yes, we all believe in Jesus, but is the Jesus you believe in the one that I believe in? And more importantly, is that Jesus the Christ of the Bible? Without dealing with different denominations, Pastor Richard's book does an excellent job of revealing how easy it is for us to succumb to making Jesus into an idol that is cast in our own image. What makes the book extra special is the personal situations that enable you to meet and interact with people who have created these false Christs. Without knowing it, I realized that I had met many of them before in my own life. The concrete methods of being able to speak to each person about who the true Christ enable the reader to be prepared to speak the truth in love while also dealing with the inevitable challenges from those who defend their false Christ. Although there is a question answer section in each chapter that would work well for a book study, I would love to see this book adapted for Bible Study use as well! A few short acted video/skits in each setting would really provided gripping introductions for those who won't read the book so that the content could be addressed. I think this is a critical book for everyone to read.

Marvelous book for the Ages

This is an exceptional, timeless book that rightly defines the Biblical Christ. This book is written powerfully and clearly and recommended for all to read. Richard writes in a manner that is at the same time conversational and intellectual, a style useful for Christians and non-Christians alike. So often we are confronted with a false understanding of Christ and find it difficult to articulate a clear defense. Richard's book wonderfully lays out this gentle defense in regard to these various false views of Christ. I strongly recommend this book for every pastor, Christian, Bible Class, and seminarian. Great read! Rev. Dr. James A. Baneck, Executive Director of Pastoral Education, LCMS.

Cultural Jesus v. The Real Deal

Our culture has all kinds of ideas about Jesus. I greatly appreciated Matthew Richard's upfront and upclose look at who the read Jesus is. I confronted some idols I didn't even know I had. I learned a lot of new terminology, and enjoyed finding small tidbits of knowledge and insight in extra boxes and formats throughout the book. Sometimes, we all need to confront the difference between our cultural ideas of God and the real thing, which can only be found in the Bible. This book helps you do just that!

Focused, conversational, gospel-driven apologetic

Pastor Richard's writing is exceptional. As the genre of this book is an expose of idols Christians tend to embrace, whether in part or in whole, this volume is an equal opportunity offender. But Pastor Richard refrains from poking the eye of the reader with a sharp stick, preferring to employ non-sensational examples of human endeavors (or theological positions) that all of us tend to substitute for the finished work of Christ's death and resurrection for the forgiveness of sins. There is a bit of a broad brush, perhaps by necessity for a tome of conversational tone. The reader must understand that not all pietism is legalism (or subjectivism), and that not all revival is Keswick second-blessing (or Finney). But if that same reader can lay aside any self-justification or defensiveness the idols of the heart will be laid bare, replaced with gentle forgiveness and free grace. I highly recommend this book. A great book for the Church

An everyday guide to Christology. Pastor Richard both unmasks the identity of many “false christs” and shows how the devil, the world and our own sinfulness lead us to worship these idols. Extremely accessible, and yet also full of solid theology, this little book teaches how to evangelically engage the people we meet in our everyday life, recognize when a “false christ” is being proclaimed, and offers Christians a useful guide for engaging our erring neighbor with humility, all the while looking for the opportunity to confess the real Jesus, in whom alone we have real salvation. Pastor David Warner, LCMS Missionary to Spain

The Genuine Christ

Rev. Richard shows us who the genuine Christ is by exposing a dozen popular false christs that compete with him in today’s religious marketplace. Good theology well written is always a pleasure to read, especially when the topic is the person and work of our Savior, Jesus Christ. This is an excellent book, written in a conversational and easy to read style. Rev. Richard refutes false conceptions about who Jesus is, what he has done for us, and what he says to us. He does so clearly and pastorally.

An Extremely Helpful Introduction to the Lutheran Understading of Jesus

In the Will the Real Jesus Please Stand Up? Rev. Dr. Matthew Richards provides a series of highly relatable examples of the false Christs that American culture has enticed ordinary Christians with. Specifically, these Christs offer salvation either through an antinomian rejection of the law or a legalist rejection of the gospel. Such false Christs are ultimately a byproduct of fallen humanity’s compulsion to reject God’s objective Word in favor of the individual’s inner thoughts and feelings (enthusiasm). In a most excellent manner, Richards not only gives the reader a tools for identifying these false Christs, but helpful responses to those who devote themselves to such idols.

Jesus Stands Up, 12 others sit

“That is not the Jesus I know!” How many times have we heard this? Pastor Richard takes us on a enlightening and structured journey of identifying the 12 of the common false christs encountered in Christianity. He does this by providing the reader with easy to understand, theologically rich discernment tools. From start to finish the reader will walk away with a better understanding of who “Real Jesus” is and how He alone stands for poor wretched sinners. Pastor Richard writes with depth, insight, and experience. A definite must for any Christian seeking to faithfully follow Jesus.

A gem for our time!

This is simply an outstanding book! With so many false christs lurking in the world and our churches today, Pastor Richard deftly gets to the heart of such idolatry. Written with superb narrative wit and great pastoral care, he provides a brilliant tool for the diagnosis, prescription, and curative treatment of such pervasive idolatries. Capturing the plight of multiple misbeliefs with clear and accessible language, Pastor Richard faithfully presents the real Jesus Christ, bloodied and crucified for you, and regularly given to you through His Word and Sacrament. This is a gem for our time! I encourage you to read it, do a book study on it at your congregation, or give it as a gift. This is a marvelous book! Rev. Dr. Lucas V. Woodford
