When’s the last time you stepped up to the counter and ordered one medium-size Jesus, extra generous, and heavy on the bling? Or maybe you like your Jesus supersized! No? Perhaps you prefer yours extra small, and hold the onion please.

Here’s the same question: When’s the last time you took a hammer and a chisel to the Jesus of the Bible and formed Him into your own personal Jesus?

Will the Real Jesus Please Stand Up? not only reminds us who the real Jesus of the Bible is, but it also reveals to us twelve false christs who are embraced, loved, promoted, and revered—even by well-meaning Christians.

An interesting, engaging book

I sometimes have problems with starting books and failing to finish them, however I was able to complete this one in no time! The book describes 12 "false christs" people often uphold in everyday life, and goes on to point us to the real Jesus Christ. It is a very interesting read which I highly recommend!

A must read

Pr. Richard's book should be in every pastor's personal library and a copy should be on the shelf of every congregation's library (and should frequently be checked out to be read). It would not be a bad idea to present it as a gift when new members are received into membership. Pr. Richard identifies 12 false christs, many of which one can recognize as having met. The reader may also become aware of warnings of their own shortcomings when tempted to accept or promote those false ideas.

Jesus is so much better than His counterfeits!

In this book, Pastor Richard helps the reader recognize and respond to false teachings. When left uncorrected, the teachings lead Christians away from Jesus to the worship of idols. I have seen and heard each of these false teachings many times. In light of this, I urge you to attend a faithful Lutheran church, to seek opportunities to hear your pastor teach, and to carefully read this book. In Christ, Pastor Luke Berntson of Maranatha Lutheran Church, AFLC, Ulen, MN.

Confrontational book.

Great book, although it could be very confrontational. Are you following the real Jesus or a Jesus made by your own imagination? As an ex-charismatic I have to confess that I followed a Jesus that was not the real Jesus. This book describes the counterfeit jesus, several of them actually, very well, but it also teaches us Who the Real Jesus is. I highly recommend this book.

been there - done that

I was baptized and confirmed LCMS Lutheran in the 60s and I am one who has returned to Confessional Lutheranism in my senior adult years. Matt Richards has correctly defined and described most, if not all, of the false christs of the secular world and our current culture. His assessment and his advice are spot-on for the situations we face in today's world. I'm planning to give this book as gifts to several people this year. 5-star recommended reading !!!

In C.S. Lewis’ The Great Divorce, an angel offered to kill the red lizard perched on a man’s shoulder and so set him free from a comfortably cherished substitute savior along with it’s lies and false comfort. Reluctantly he allowed the angel to kill his whispering lizard and so was delivered from it’s tyranny and destruction. With the insight of that angel and the skill of a surgeon, Dr. Richard wields the sword of God’s Word to diagnose and remove the red lizards in false christ’s clothing that people have embraced rather than the real Jesus revealed in Holy Scripture. Will the real Jesus stand up? Indeed, not only does the Real Jesus stand up throughout the pages of Dr. Richard’s book, but the Real Jesus also slays the lizards and dragons who try to take His place and lead His people astray. Rev. Joshua D. Reimche, Pastor Our Savior Lutheran, Bottineau ND Immanuel Lutheran, Willow Creek ND St. Paul Lutheran, Rugby ND

An eye-opening book!

As a layperson, I found this to be a very informative and eye-opening book on how the Jesus of the Bible is changed to fit the various beliefs, life styles and circumstances of individuals in today's culture. Pastor Richard has written this book in such a way that it is part "story telling" in order for the reader to understand the different real life circumstances that lead to false Christs, while then explaining how the real Jesus is "added to" and "subtracted from" in order to fit these circumstances. The real Jesus of the Bible is brought forward throughout the book by continually pointing out that it’s not about what we have to do (or not do) to earn His saving grace but to what He has done for us by dying on the cross for our sins.

We all believe in Jesus...

How many times have you heard it, "We all believe in Jesus..."? This is often said to downplay the differences between denominations. Yes, we all believe in Jesus, but is the Jesus you believe in the one that I believe in? And more importantly, is that Jesus the Christ of the Bible? Without dealing with different denominations, Pastor Richard's book does an excellent job of revealing how easy it is for us to succumb to making Jesus into an idol that is cast in our own image. What makes the book extra special is the personal situations that enable you to meet and interact with people who have created these false Christs. Without knowing it, I realized that I had met many of them before in my own life. The concrete methods of being able to speak to each person about who the true Christ enable the reader to be prepared to speak the truth in love while also dealing with the inevitable challenges from those who defend their false Christ. Although there is a question answer section in each chapter that would work well for a book study, I would love to see this book adapted for Bible Study use as well! A few short acted video/skits in each setting would really provided gripping introductions for those who won't read the book so that the content could be addressed. I think this is a critical book for everyone to read.

Marvelous book for the Ages

This is an exceptional, timeless book that rightly defines the Biblical Christ. This book is written powerfully and clearly and recommended for all to read. Richard writes in a manner that is at the same time conversational and intellectual, a style useful for Christians and non-Christians alike. So often we are confronted with a false understanding of Christ and find it difficult to articulate a clear defense. Richard's book wonderfully lays out this gentle defense in regard to these various false views of Christ. I strongly recommend this book for every pastor, Christian, Bible Class, and seminarian. Great read! Rev. Dr. James A. Baneck, Executive Director of Pastoral Education, LCMS.

Cultural Jesus v. The Real Deal

Our culture has all kinds of ideas about Jesus. I greatly appreciated Matthew Richard's upfront and upclose look at who the read Jesus is. I confronted some idols I didn't even know I had. I learned a lot of new terminology, and enjoyed finding small tidbits of knowledge and insight in extra boxes and formats throughout the book. Sometimes, we all need to confront the difference between our cultural ideas of God and the real thing, which can only be found in the Bible. This book helps you do just that!
