The Message worth dying for . . .

The government tells fifteen-year-old Simon Clay everything he needs to know. Except what really happened to his mom. And why no one can go out at night. And why the Darkness is so dangerous.

By day, Simon pushes against every boundary there is. And by night, secret visitors and hidden messages make him question everything his life entails.

There’s a truth out there to be discovered, a truth the government will stop at nothing to stamp out. Join Simon and the Messengers as they risk their lives to protect it.

Book one of The Messengers Series.

Praise for The Messengers: Discovered

“In a trend that will surely be replicated many times but never perfected in the same way, Lisa Clark has combined heady Christian theology and a dystopian YA thriller for middle-grade readers. Simon is the son of a secretive—but loving—father who discovers that the Darkness (the nameless fear that his community of rules and order pins everything on) is actually the message of the Gospel. Doled out in small but potent doses, the Message is sweet like honey to all who hear it in this debut thriller that is appropriate for children probably as young as ten. Lisa Clark's writing is tightly effective, but the heart with which she deals with the theology is light and jubilant. Young readers will love the rebellion against the authorities, while parents will delight in handing their children a book that not only encourages sharing their faith—even in the worst circumstances—but also embraces the importance of family, love, and friendship. The first of a series, I have no doubt that Clark's writing will quickly take this book to the top of the growing YA inspirational genre.”
—Colleen Oakes, Author of the bestselling Queen of Hearts Saga

“There are writers, and there are artists. Lisa Clark is both. Her storytelling voice is compelling and consistent—a magical combination not easily achieved in first novels—and her venture into dystopian fiction serves only to make clear the certain and enduring reality of Christ and His church. If The Messengers: Discovered is any indication, then this series is gearing up to be one of my favorites.”
—Katie Schuermann, Author of the Anthems of Zion series and Pew Sisters

“Lisa Clark's Discovered adds to the growing genre of juvenile dystopian literature a well-written first installment in The Messengers series. In Simon Clay's story, both young and young at heart will be drawn into a story of renewal amid adversity, courage in the face of resistance. I recommend this book and look forward to the next installment.”
—Jeff Alexander, Pastor, Mount Olive Lutheran Church

“Lisa Clark writes in a way that we will sit up and take notice that the world around us isn't quite the way it's supposed to be. We begin to find ourselves in the story of Simon, of Jonathan, of Charity, of Zeke. We are reminded that each of us has a message worth dying for.

“Engaging characters, a fascinating dystopia, and a truly worthwhile message. When I turned the last page, I instantly thought of three people to share it with!”
—Heidi Goehmann, Writer

This book rocks!

Wonderful YA Series That Points To Christ

I felt immediately invested in Simon's story. Lisa does an excellent job in introducing us to a society that is both foreign and yet chillingly familiar. This book leaves you immensely grateful for the Message worth dying for. An intriguing start to a wonderful series!

Young Adult Fiction with a Higher Purpose

This book is dystopian young adult fiction with a higher purpose. Clark deftly incorporates the covert worship practices of the early Christian church under persecution and sets it in an Orwellian society that may not be far away from the present day. Bibles are banned, the assembly of those believing in the fairy tales of religion is outlawed, persons are only permitted to read what's approved by the authorities. Every aspect of a human's being life is monitored and controlled by the government, including what words one may read and possess. Beauty and creativity is suppressed and replaced with only that which serves a utilitarian purpose. This book could help younger believers better understand what life is already like today for Christians throughout the world who live under oppressive governments, atheistic dictators, or nations ruled by radical Islamists or Hindus, and impress upon them the importance of preserving our First Amendment religious liberty. Also, the practical benefit of memorizing large chunks of Scripture and the Catechism shines through in such a way that I may have to consider making this required reading for future catechumens.

Awesome Book for all ages

Great book for youth and adults. I'm a 33 year old married male and I loved it. The book is true to Scripture and Lutheranism. I think this book would be a great gift for confirmands too. I highly recommend it.

Solid Christian Message for Teen Readers

My daughter loves teen/YA fiction, which often times promotes ideas that run counter to Christian values. The Messengers series retains much of the edginess and dystopia of secular YA fiction, but introduces an underlying vein of Christian hope. As teenage years can often be dark or depressing, the book relays the message that Christ is a lighthouse in the gloom. Although my daughter was skeptical at first of a YA fiction book with Christian underpinnings, she enjoyed it and asked when the next book in the series will be released. It is invaluable to have books like this to counter the secular culture of YA fiction and I greatly look forward to the next in the series.

Great book for YA

As a middle school reading teacher at a Christian school, I am always looking for books with a Christian message to put on my shelf; however, they are few and far between. This is one of the best YA novels I have read! It has a great message about what could happen if we take our faith and the Word for granted! This book has been continuously checked out since I put it on my shelf at the beginning of the year! Can't wait for the next book!

The Messengers: Discovered

I truly enjoyed the book, I loved how it made you feel like you were right there with him through his whole ordeal. I love the fact that it was about bring people back to Christ. It seems today they are trying so hard to put God out of our society and at times feels this could actually happen to us. This book is definitely a good read for students. It could be an eye opener to what could happen if they are not paying attention. Learn the word, because you never know when Christ will return. Thank you for thinking of our youth when you wrote this book. I am anxiously waiting the next book.

Engaging and entertaining fiction!

Clark's outstanding first novel is both entertaining and convicting at the same time. Readers will understand it as a modern day re-telling of the early Christian church, while also pondering if this is the coming reality for Christians. Suitable for YA and adults alike, The Messengers: Discovered opens doors to profound conversations about living out our faith and why it matters "even when steeples are falling." Seamlessly weaving theology and the historic liturgy together with suspense and intrigue, Discovered is a welcome addition to Christian fiction and the Lutheran church. Clark's gift of writing leaves readers completely satisfied while hungering for more of Simon Clay and the Messengers- and ultimately, the Word.

More good fiction from CPH! Hooray!

I am so glad that CPH is releasing Christian fiction now, and I'm absolutely thrilled that it's GOOD. This book is engaging, entertaining, and deeply moving - be sure to set aside some time before you start, because you're going to have a hard time putting this one down. The best thing about it was, in the midst of all the excitement, a clear emphasis on the power of God's Word to work salvation, the value of memory work, and the beauty of the liturgy in the Divine Service.

Rare, Intriguing and Inspiring

I haven't finished reading Discovered yet, only because I don't want it to end! I realized I might have a long wait for book #2, and so I slowed down. That being said, this is a book I will read more than once and can't wait for my daughter to get old enough to enjoy it also. It is so rare to find a book that makes you want to learn more about our confessions, but this one is very inspiring-in a totally non guilt-inducing way! And to include parts of the Divine Service so the reader is automatically reciting along with Simon, is brilliant. What better way to get us to really think about those words we say weekly!
