Faith, betrayal, hard times, and leadership

The two years when the Saxons settled in Perry County, Missouri, to start a new church were about as eventful as one can imagine for conservative Lutheran families. The story begins in Germany and includes a bishop who indulged in extramarital affairs with impunity. Many families had invested life savings to come to America, and, except for the kindness of French settlers, might have starved that first winter. Their determination to follow the Lord was great, and great leadership grew up to meet the challenges of the times. It was a story I've heard my whole life because my family roots are there, but the story has real power for any reader. It's not smoothly told, but that only adds to the authenticity. This isn't a book you will soon forget.
