From the Concordia Children's Series, a new text and tune for use on Ash Wednesday with unison or two-part choir, piano, and flute. Don Petering's text explores the meaning of the ashen cross worn on Ash Wednesday. The tune and setting by Jonathan Kohrs take full advantage of the piano and highlight the last two words of each stanza: "for You."

I bear the ashen cross upon my brow:
The sign of sorrow, evidence of how,
O Christ, You won salvation for my soul.
The agony, the nails, the pain for me
You suffered there upon the cursed tree
That I might be from sin's disease made whole.
How can I show my fervent love is true?
I'll wear the cross upon my brow for You.

The cross of sorrow, yet of triumph bold
Now made of ashes, soon a crown of gold.
I wear it with sincere repentant sigh.
Made right with God the heav'nly Father, now
I boldly stand with ash upon my brow
And sing my praise to You, O Lord Most High!
How can I show my fervent love is true?
I'll wear the cross upon my brow for You.

Another cross was placed upon my brow,
One giv'n to me at my baptismal vow
When made the Father's child eternally.
Your cross became my cross upon that day
When all my many sins were washed away,
And I was cleansed, made guiltless, pure, and free.
How can I show my fervent love is true?
I'll wear the cross upon my brow for You.
