Rev. David
Great Resource for Catechism Instruction in Parish and Home

As a pastor I have noticed that children do not have as solid of a foundation in the history of the Biblical accounts. We teach them the Catechism, but it amounts to a bunch of abstract answers to a test only to move on to the next thing. Dogmatic questions and answers are necessary. But if the children do not learn the history in which such eternal truths of Christian doctrine play out and have been accomplished, then they will treat Christian instruction as line upon line, precept upon precept, rather than the life God gives us in our daily lives. This edition of Bible History does a great job in showing how Christian doctrine is very much alive in the narratives of the biblical accounts, and therefore also alive in the stories of our own lives. Here they can see how Christian doctrine, summed up in the six chief parts, is applied to real people in history. Combined with realistic illustrations, which do not give into the cartoonish style of many children's Bible books, along with items for study and review questions, including Catechism questions, Bible verses, and Lutheran hymn stanzas, this book is a must have for any Catechetical instruction of the youth. I can't possibly use every story with only an hour and a half once a week. I try to pick out the most significant stories in a series of three years, two years in the Old Testament and one year in the New. However, this is also a great resource for pastors to introduce to parents of young children. Get them going early at home!
