Refreshing and Encouraging
Far from a shallow checklist, this short book of 96-pages is an encouraging consideration of Lutheran congregational hospitality. The text goes through both what it means to be caring and cared for in a good Word-and-Sacrament-centered way.
I found the book to be refreshing and encouraging. No false or unrealistic expectations added. Woo hoo!
There’s common sense, common practices, and a general overview of Christian care. Well-suited to group reading, chapters end with key points, questions, and action items, making this is a great resource for congregation-wide study. This book would be especially ideal for groups like call committees and congregations evaluating themselves.
It is written with Lutherans in mind, but I think it could be helpful for a great many faithful congregations. I consider it to be well-grounded in Scripture and general hospitality considerations. Still, it is particularly satisfying to this Lutheran, with its solid proclamation of Gospel and appreciation of the means of grace and pastors. 🙂
The five chapters:
Understand Why You Care
Show Uncommon Common Sense
Care for the Community
Care for Church Workers and Their Families
Care for the Congregation
