Follow the Lamb offers a unique, economical and easy-to-use reproducible five-day VBS program for early childhood students through sixth graders. Older children are encouraged to participate as helpers. Students participate in hands-on activities, role-playing, and lessons as they walk through the major events of Christ's life as celebrated in the Christian Church Year: Christmas, Holy Week, the Resurrection, the Ascension and Pentecost.

The theme of the week is what life was like for the first Christians in the Early Church. Instructions are provided to help congregations recreate a 1st century atmosphere with costumes, props, and other suggestions. The crafts use easily obtained materials to help the children experience 1st century art forms: mosaics, clay objects, print making, etc. All instructions, teachers' guides, and materials lists are provided.

The music component of Follow the Lamb teaches children the major parts of the liturgy as it has been handed down to us from the earliest days of the Church. Hymns are suggested for each day's theme, some of which were written in the Early Church era.

A daily order of worship and a skit about a first century boy and his family as they prepare to be baptized and confirmed are provided. They are easy to do and are a great way to involve Junior and Senior High youth in the program.

The focus of Follow the Lamb is on Christ Jesus who guides and guards us through life, forgives us our sins, and provides His Church with the gifts it needs to follow Him, (proclaiming His Gospel, thanking and praising, serving and obeying Him to all eternity.)

Concordia Publishing House is pleased to offer the popular and cost-effective Follow the Lamb (3rd edition). Earlier editions of this VBS program have been used and field tested thoroughly by congregations throughout the English-speaking world. Written by Deaconess Pamela Nielsen, Follow the Lamb is completely reproducible, making it a cost-effective VBS option.

Excellent Value

We had great success with this curriculum for a mission VBS in rural Alaska. It provides solid Lutheran theology, strong scriptural teaching, and a simple format which keeps the focus on the central Biblical teaching. If you are looking for a solidly Lutheran Bible school curriculum without all the bells and whistles that can distract from the Gospel, this is an excellent value.

Good theology, badly organized

This VBS has a great many interesting ideas for how to put together an interesting week about the ancient church, all tied together with good Lutheran theology. But it has no suggestions for snacks, nothing for games, and it makes references to the all-important closing worship service but never gives instructions for that service. One of the crafts, banner-making, is pointedly referred to as important for the closing service, and yet we are never told how they are to be used in said service, because that service doesn't exist in the VBS documentation. The package overall is poorly organized, with pieces of information regarding specific parts of the VBS strewn about its pages with no cross-referencing, multiple typographical errors which making teaching off of the scripts a chore, and many cases of information which is completely skipped over or omitted. Unless you have a dedicated helper or DCE who is willing to order this very early to make sense of it all (give yourself a few months of dedicated time to simply parse out all the information into sensible chunks for your workers), I would avoid it.
