From the Editor

Christ's Kingdom for You

This quarter, we will study Daniel, the last of the Major Prophets; the twelve Minor Prophets; and the first two Gospels of our Lord. What a marvelous sequence of Bible study to have the Gospels follow so closely on the heels of the prophets, all of which point to the promised Messiah.

Here are brief summaries of the final nine books of the Old Testament:

Obadiah’s concluding words, “The kingdom will be the Lord’s” (1:21), remind us of Jesus’ victory over sin, death, and the devil’s power.Jonah’s experience in the belly of the fish prefigures Jesus’ burial and resurrection, and Jesus will be the one to explain this.Micah writes of Bethlehem seven hundred years before Jesus would be born in a humble town and laid in a humble manger. Nahum speaks of God’s justice and mercy toward man; providing a glimpse of the person and work of Jesus Christ. Habakkuk’s phrase, “The righteous shall live by faith” (Habakkuk 2:4), is quoted by the apostle Paul and is central to his preaching of Christ.Zephaniah describes the coming of Christ in layers that lets us see both the first advent of Christ and His glorious return.Haggai reminds God’s people of their priorities. Later, Jesus will teach the same: “seek first the kingdom of God” (Matthew 6:33). Zechariah foretells Christ’s triumphant entry into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday. Malachi describes John the Baptist, the messenger sent to prepare the way of the Lord. Having gone through these prophets, God’s fulfillment of promise and prophecy proclaimed in the Gospels of Matthew and Mark will shine with clarity and great comfort.

May God bless you as you read and study His Word!

In Christ,
Barbara Szofran
