This compelling SATB setting of “O Dearest Jesus” pairs Jonathan Kohrs’s expressive writing and new tune with a beloved but searingly honest passion text, creating an anthem of deep intensity and devotional focus.
This compelling SATB setting of “O Dearest Jesus” pairs Jonathan Kohrs’s expressive writing and new tune with a beloved but searingly honest passion text, creating an anthem of deep intensity and devotional focus. The piece’s recurring opening motive—an octave leap followed by a seventh—cuts with poignancy, mirroring the text’s raw emotional weight. The climactic final stanza offers an especially moving moment: the traditional chorale tune appears in the piano part, grounding the piece in its historic roots and providing a profoundly satisfying conclusion. Written in the same key as the hymn in Lutheran Service Book, stanzas from this anthem could be used in alternation with the congregation singing other stanzas from the hymnal. Suitable for Lent and especially Holy Week, this piece is a powerful, emotionally resonant proclamation of Christ’s suffering and sacrificial love.
