Charles A. Gieschen

Dr. Charles A. Gieschen is Provost and Professor of Exegetical Theology at Concordia Theological Seminary, Fort Wayne, Indiana (CTSFW). He is a graduate of this seminary (MDiv 1984) and has completed graduate degrees in New Testament Studies at Princeton Theological Seminary (ThM 1985) and the University of Michigan (PhD 1995). He is an ordained pastor of The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod (LCMS) who served as associate and then senior pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church in Traverse City, Michigan, from 1985 until being called to CTSFW in 1996. He has taught Greek and New Testament courses since his arrival and has also served as Provost since 2011. His first book, Angelomorphic Christology, was published by Brill Academic Press in 1998 and was released in softcover by Baylor Academic Press in 2017. He edited a collection of essays entitled The Law in Holy Scripture that was published by Concordia Publishing House (2004). He is currently completing the manuscript for the Concordia Commentary on 1-2 Thessalonians. He has written, taught, and lectured extensively as a scholar of early expressions of Jesus’ divine identity and his pre-existence. He has also authored some popular articles and studies, including Romans in Concordia Publishing House’s Abiding Word series (2001). He served as the Associate Editor of the seminary journal, Concordia Theological Quarterly, from 2006-2024, and has served as Editor since 2024. He was one of the seminary faculty representatives who served on the Commission on Theology and Church Relations of the LCMS from 2007 until 2016. He is a member of the Society of Biblical Literature, the International Enoch Seminar (a group dedicated to the study of Second Temple Jewish Literature), and the Chief Academic Officer Society of the Association of Theological Schools. He has been married to his wife, Kristi, since 1985. Their marriage has been blessed with a son (Stephan), a daughter (Lauren), a daughter-in-law (Megan), a son-in-law (Andrew Fratzke), and two grandchildren.
