Instrumental parts. A setting of Heinrich Schütz's Seven Words from the Cross for SSATB, soloists, 3 violins, viola, violoncello, and organ.
“Die sieben Worte Jesu Christi am Kreuz” in German, but translated by Richard T. Gore, “The Seven Words of Christ on the Cross” is set for SSATB choir, soloists, strings, and organ. This wonderful work, composed in 1645, stands in the middle of Heinrich Schütz’s creative life and shows fusion of the polyphonic style with new declamatory style. The text is drawn from the four Gospels and highlights Christ’s seven words on the cross. It is certainly most appropriate for Good Friday but can work in performance during the Lenten season.
