This report from the Commission of Theology and Church Relations (CTCR) addresses a number of contemporary issues regarding what historically has been known as "the divine call."
According to the report, "the New Testament says very little about the exact procedures for placing someone into, or removing someone from the office of the public ministry." But, it adds, "some principles may be drawn from information given in certain narratives of the New Testament." Three features of the call process can be drawn from the Scriptures and traditionally are regarded by the church as not negotiable:
preparation of an individual that certifies him as competent and fit for the office
his selection by the church
his ordination and installation into the office
The precise way in which these elements are implemented have varied from time to time and place to place, depending on the procedures established by human beings with the church.
While the report focuses on "a man's call with the office of the public ministry," it notes that what is said about the "divine call" of pastors may be applied to the "calls of individuals into auxiliary offices to the extent that they participate in and support the office of the public ministry."
