Propeller Power: Activity
NEW! Frequently Asked Questions
An interactive learning experience in investigating recycling for first grade students.
Objective
To demonstrate the difference in decomposition rates for organic
and inorganic substances. The banana peels showed evidence
of decomposition, so they can be recycled in the earth. The
plastic bottle caps don't decompose in the earth, so they
need to be recycled in another way.s
Materials
plastic bottle caps
banana peels
several boxes of soil
button making supplies (paper, markers, button making equipment)
Activity
1. Fill each carton with soil.
2. Bury a banana peel in carton 1 and a cap in carton 2. Put
both cartons in a warm place.
3. Spray (or water) each carton 10 times and then close each
carton.
4. Repeat step 3 each day for four weeks.
5. Uncover the objects and record what you see.
Faith Application
Jesus "recycled" us when He died to give us eternal
life (2 Corinthians 5:17). He washed us clean and gave us
a purpose. Make a button to wear showing that you have been
"Recycled by Jesus."

Picturing Magnetic Force
An interactive learning experience in investigating magnetic
force and interpreting scientific evidence for fourth grade
students.
Objective
To demonstrate how observable effects provide evidence of
things we cannot see, in this case, the lines of force generated
by a magnet.
Materials
goggles
gloves
bar magnet
horseshoe magnet
newspaper
2 sheets of stiff, white poster board
iron filings in a jar with a sprinkler top
notebook
Activity
1. Place a bar magnet on a sheet of newspaper and put a sheet
of white poster board on top
of it.
2. Carefully sprinkle iron filings on the cardboard over the
magnet.
3. Tap the cardboard gently, then look for patterns of lines
of iron fillings. In your Science
Notebook, draw the pattern the lines form.
4. Repeat steps 1 and 2 using a clean sheet of poster board
and a magnet of a different
shape.
5. Talk with your group and together predict the pattern that
the iron filings will form. Then
make a drawing to show your prediction.
6. Repeat step 3 to test your prediction and then draw what
you see.
Faith Application
People from every nationality, ethnic group and social class
have been drawn to Jesus and His cross as the way of salvation.
Let students explain ways the cross is like a magnet. Accept
reasonable comparisons.

An interactive learning experience in investigating propeller
design for sixth grade students.
From Science DiscoveryWorks-Concordia Edition Grade Six Teacher's
Guide (F-108)
Objective
To demonstrate how the design on a propeller affects flight.
The students should find that the weight of a propeller and
its surface area affect its performance.
Materials
pennies
square sheets of paper
Science Notebook
Activity
1. Follow the diagrams to make two paper spinners, one with
wide wings and one with
narrow wings.
2. Predict what will happen when you drop the spinners from
the same height. record your
predictions in your Science Notebook.
3. Drop both spinners from the same height. Record what happens
as they fall.
4. Repeat steps 2 and 3.
5. Make another narrow spinner and tape a penny to the bottom.
6. Drop the two narrow spinners-one with the penny and one
without the penny-from the
same height. Record what you observe.
Faith Application
"But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength.
They will soar on wings like eagles, they will run and not
grow weary, they will walk and not be faint." (Isaiah
40:31).
God's people of the Old Testament knew a lot about eagles.
They watched them soar and dive and race toward the clouds.
God's people probably wished they could fly like eagles. Early
aviators really wanted to fly. They also looked to God as
the ultimate Creator and designer, and they tried to copy
the birds as they designed the first planes.
Isaiah, preaching God's Word, told people that faith in God
was like having the strength of an eagle. God enables His
people to fly in freedom and have the power to do great things
in His name.
