Copy Editor
Full-time

Scope

Copy editors serve as quality control for CPH products and promotional pieces by carefully editing developed manuscripts and implementing necessary changes. The specific responsibilities of this position are as follows:

  • Review and correct developed manuscripts and promotional material for (a) CPH style; (b) standard rules of grammar and spelling; (c) clarity of thought and organization; (d) continuity among similar pieces; (e) accuracy of facts and sources; and (f) art directions, marking changes on manuscript pages or electronic files for future reference.
  • Check validity and copyright information of quotes and references.
  • Discuss substantive changes with the project's developmental editor.
  • Write new copy as needed when requested by editor.
  • Add changes to computer files of manuscripts.
  • Check that manuscript has been reviewed for doctrine and that doctrinal review concerns are addressed.
  • Read through first pages checking for style continuity and to compare copy with art placement.
  • Check second pages and final pages to ensure everything is in place and all queries and concerns are answered before product is published.
  • Review final files for manner of typographical and layout issues (e.g., typeface issues, word/line breaks, running heads, folios, and other proofreading tasks).
  • Work with other editors to develop and maintain House Stylebook.
  • Work within budget while staying on schedule and meeting deadlines.

The successful candidate will have the following knowledge and experience:

  • A minimum of one year of experience in editing.
  • Solid understanding of LCMS theology, doctrine, and church structure
  • InCopy is strongly preferred
  • Use of various reference resources including books and Internet
  • Publishing terminology and practice
  • Chicago Manual of Style is preferred.
  • B.S. degree in Journalism, English, Theology, or related field or equivalent experience

Director, Curriculum Resources
Full-time

Scope

Develop curriculum material for use in congregational education programs, and provide leadership in their articulation. The Director of Curriculum Resources manages the day-to-day work of all curriculum editorial staff, including those working on Vacation Bible School, Sunday School, Day School and Midweek, Bible resources, youth Bible studies, and other curriculum materials as required. The essential functions of this position are as follows:

  • Provide leadership for the development of overall plans for the CPH curriculum resources by collaborating with editors in assessing needs and determining both long-range and short-term production plans and personnel assignments for each curriculum product area.
  • Oversee design and development of each product, ensuring the curricula is theologically sound and pedagogically excellent.
  • Oversee curriculum development processes that include concept exploration, requirements analysis, course design, content development, and student/teacher resource development.
  • Monitor trends in course delivery and direct changes as needed to ensure continuous effectiveness, product improvement, and growth.
  • Carry out periodic re-evaluation and, when necessary, revision of extant materials.
  • Respond to those who communicate with CPH in reference to curriculum materials, delegating communication to appropriate editorial staff as necessary.
  • Provide leadership for curriculum editors working with other CPH departments and with district and synodical officials of the LCMS also charged with responsibilities for educational curriculum.
  • Prepare annual budget and operation plans.
  • Provide leadership, direction, motivation, and supervision of direct reports. Coach staff in the growth and improvement of skills through timely, specific, and constructive feedback. Oversee training and development of employees.
  • Occasionally prepare and present workshops to equip and encourage church workers and lay volunteers in the use of CPH curriculum resources.

The successful candidate will have the following knowledge and experience:

  • Solid background in curriculum, educational trends, philosophical underpinnings, current research in education, curriculum technologies, and child development
  • Knowledge of Christian education, especially as it pertains to the Christian Day School and volunteer educational agencies in the church, particularly Midweek School and confirmation
  • Effective writing and editing skills, particularly as it pertains to curriculum development, planning, and organizing
  • Ability to evaluate and systematize staff workloads
  • A minimum of five years experience in Lutheran education and demonstrated competencies in current technology as it pertains to curriculum (required)
  • MS degree or equivalent graduate training in education (required), a PhD or its equivalent (desired)
  • Active on the official roster of the LCMS

Product Designer
Full-time

Scope

Product Designers craft interfaces for web and mobile applications. They are responsible for establishing conventions, facilitating new development with mockups and wireframes, and implementing design. By working closely with developers, designers commit to learning and improving their craft. The specific responsibilities of this position are as follows:

  • Establish conventions and visual metaphors for use across our applications.
  • Contribute to the incubation of new products and features.
  • Learn from—and improve upon—designs iteratively.
  • Translate concepts into wireframes, sketches, and mock-ups.
  • Implement designs by hand-coding HTML and CSS.
  • Ask questions of developers, designers, product owners, and customers to tease out requirements, use cases, and concerns. Learn new techniques to grow as a designer.
  • Pair-program with other developers on new features.
  • Maintain well-organized CSS and HTML that makes its intent clear.
  • Research and evaluate third-party libraries for use in our projects.

The successful candidate will have the following knowledge and experience:

  • Ability to apply principles of interface design to communicate applications’ state and options, manage complexity, focus features, and create enjoyable experiences
  • A working knowledge of HTML and CSS
  • Competent with Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator (or comparable tools)
  • Competent with tools for creating wireframes (e.g. Balsamiq, Axure)
  • Comfortable with Git (committing, branching, cloning, merging, rebasing)
  • Minimum of three years’ experience as a graphic/product designer or web developer

Software Support Technician
Full-time

Scope

Software Support Technicians provide high-quality help desk support to users of CPH computer products via inbound and outbound phone calls, email, and web chat. The specific responsibilities of this position are as follows:

  • Serve as primary contact person for inbound and outbound help desk support calls, e-mail, and web chat.
  • Provide customers with accurate and creative assistance for CPH computer, online, and downloadable resources.
  • Assist customers with general technical issues regarding current CPH websites.
  • Assist in creating and updating CTS software documentation, including print, online, and video format.
  • Provide data conversions from third-party software.
  • Apply technical writing skills to resource development.

The successful candidate will have the following knowledge and experience:

  • A minimum of one year of experience with software programs, Windows operating systems, technical writing, web browsers, web-based applications, troubleshooting PC applications, and PC hardware
  • Experience with HTML, CSS, and SQL is helpful
  • B.S. in related field is strongly preferred; high school diploma or equivalent is required
