Carl Schalk has prepared this unaccompanied setting of the Passion of Our Lord especially for use on Good Friday, when the John account is normally read and the use of organ or instruments is limited to support the hymn singing. Most of the Gospel text is presented by soloists; the choir sings in parts the roles of the crowds. Concluding the Passion account is the old Lutheran chorale, “O Sinner, Ponder, Come and See.”
