Dr.
Gene Edward Veith has rendered a distinct service in providing
a very readable guide to the faith that Lutherans believe,
teach, and confess. The Spirituality of the Cross: The
Way of the First Evangelicals (CPH, 1999) is something
of a testimony, Veith writes as one who is an adult convert
to Lutheranism. He tells how he was drawn to Lutheranism not
in spite of its sacramental theology, careful catechesis,
and liturgical practice but through these things. Above all,
Veith demonstrates a clear understanding that the Gospel is
both done and delivered. That is, Jesus Christ won our salvation
by His suffering and death on the cross. His redeeming work
is finished and complete. That redeeming work that was done
on Good Friday is now delivered to us in the preaching of
the Gospel and Absolution, in Baptism and the Lord's Supper.
These gifts now enliven and shape the ordinary life of the
Christian as he lives under the cross in anticipation of the
resurrection of the body.
These study questions are offered for those who wish to use The Spirituality of the Cross: The Way of the First Evangelicals as a text for a Bible study group. Those who wish to dig deeper
are encouraged to consult the books and articles listed at
the end of each study as well as Veith's suggestions on page
